No it's not. I use a resin medium product. It's a bit like a ready made ova with sand in it but grittier and much tougher. The type I use is from liquitex.you'll find details by going to the instructions page and reading the Painting and Finishing PDF.
The only difference on this bigger model is that I use a coarser grain than on the normal size models. That helps give a consistent impression of scale.
